Milpitas is a city in the northeast corner of the Santa Clara Valley that occupies 13.6 square miles of land with a population of approximately 67,000. The average household income for residents of Milpitas is about $99,000, and the median home price is approximately $500,000. Frequently referred to as the “Crossroads of Silicon Valley”, it is situated around three major freeways, I-880, I-680, and State Route 237 giving it great access to the other cities in Santa Clara Valley.
Ohlone Indians originally occupied several villages in the area we now call Milpitas, until the Spanish established two missions, Mission San Jose de Guadalupe in Fremont, and Mission Santa Clara de Asis in Santa Clara. The Spanish divided land around Milpitas into several ranchos, then later sold the land to the new American farmers that settled in the area during the 1850’s. The land around Milpitas had many uses, livestock and dairies, as well as, farming for a large variety of crops including, asparagus, peas, prunes, spinach, strawberries, wheat, barley, and corn. The name Milpitas means “little Cornfields”.
Milpitas became more industrial during the 1950’s, Ford Motor company set up an auto assembly plant in Milpitas for production of the Shelby Mustang and other Ford models. Later, major technology companies set up their headquarters, offices and production facilities throughout Milpitas. Adaptec, JDSU, KLA-Tencor, and Cisco, Maxtor, and Quantum are just a few of the many names of technology companies doing business in Milpitas.
The Ford Motor plant closed during the 1980’s, and in 1994 the Great Mall of the Bay Area opened its doors as the biggest mall in northern California. The Great Mall uses the same structure that Ford used for the assembly area, for this reason it is laid out as a flat mall, with only one story. A few of the brand name stores that occupy the Great Mall include Banana Republic, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Burlington Coat Factory. The major employers in Milpitas are Cisco Systems, The Great Mall, KLA Tencor and LSI Corp.
